Is government inspection better at ensuring safe produce?

I think the answer to the question Doug poses is “probably no”, but I think he also misses the point.

The California growers are coming together to self-police and self-regulate (and to self-research too).

I think we only have to look at the Almond Board of California to find a model for a modern, forward facing commodiity board that gets it. They funded the research, they funded the risk assessments, and then they acted to set standards for their industry.

You could certainly do a lot worse.
